What Are They?
LOLER stands for Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations, and concerns the safeguarding of those operating lifting equipment such as cranes.
The LOLER regulations stipulate that an examination should be completed before first use, and then every 12 months for lifting equipment, and every 6 months for lifting accessories.
Why Are They Important?
Not only is a LOLER inspection a legal requirement, but it’s purposes extend much further than to avoid legal penalties. As a business owner or manager, it is hugely important that you take the best interest of your employees into consideration – which is the primary purpose of having this inspection.
What Equipment Do They Cover?
The test covers a wide range of machinery used for lifting, including overhead cranes, hoists, manipulators, crane attachments and forklifts. As well as any below the hook lifting accessories.
What Does a LOLER Examination Test Include?
The principle behind this inspection it to make sure your cranes and other lifting equipment are safe, which is why LOLER inspection companies must take into account the following criteria:
- How robust your lifting equipment is – has the machinery you’re using been designed well and is it fit for use in terms of being able to lift the load it is used for.
- Whether your equipment meets health and safety requirements – has it been installed in a way which reduces risk of injury and does it have safety information marked in it.
- Has your lifting equipment been regularly inspected/examined and was it done by a qualified professional.
